Parental controls on the TV: what each kind of TV actually allows

Last updated October 26, 2026

Most family apps stop at phones and tablets. The TV in the living room runs a different system, and each system decides what another app is allowed to do on it. So a bedtime set on a phone can mean nothing the moment the screen gets bigger. This guide puts the five TV systems Guardian covers side by side: what works, what doesn't, and why.

The short answer

  • Android TV and Fire TV: a Guardian app runs on the TV. App blocking, block hours, daily time limits, Lock now, website filtering and Pause internet all work, at the Basic level.
  • Apple TV: Apple gives apps on Apple TV no way to block apps, set hours or lock it. That's a limit of the platform, not something waiting on an update. Websites can still be filtered through your home router.
  • Samsung and LG TVs: there is no Guardian app for them, and they don't let any other app block apps or lock the TV. The family website filter on your home router covers them.

Side by side: what a parental control app can do on each TV

"Through your home router" means the family website filter, set once on your router, covers that TV along with everything else on your home Wi-Fi.

What the protection levels mean

  • Basic: Guardian closes blocked apps when they open; a determined user could get around it.
  • Network only: Only the family website filter on your home router applies to this device.
  • No app controls: Apple TV doesn't let other apps lock it or block apps.

Android TV and Fire TV

Install, pair with the remote, then do the one-time setup. The same app as Android TV, from Amazon's store. Same setup and limits.

  • Guardian covers a blocked app as soon as it opens. It's a strong deterrent, but a determined teen may find a way around it (Basic).
  • Lock now and scheduled device lock work on Android TV. TVs don't report location.
  • Both apps are built. We're confirming them on real Amazon devices before we call them ready.

Step-by-step: set up Guardian on an Android TV or Fire TV. What app blocking looks like in practice: How to block apps on Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV.

Apple TV

  • Apple gives apps on Apple TV no way to block apps, set hours or lock it. That's a limit of the platform, not something waiting on an update.
  • Websites: turn on the family website filter on the Content filtering page and follow the home router step. It covers the Apple TV and everything else on your home Wi-Fi.
  • No location on TVs.

More on what works on Apple TV.

Samsung and LG TVs

  • There's no Guardian app for Samsung Tizen TVs.
  • What works: the family website filter on your home router, which covers this TV and everything else on your home Wi-Fi. Turn it on from the Content filtering page and follow the home router step. Some routers don't offer the setting it needs.

Why the home router is the way in

A Samsung or LG TV still looks up every website it opens. The family website filter answers those lookups for every device on your home Wi-Fi and refuses the ones you blocked, so it works without anything installed on the TV. It can't block apps or set hours, and it only applies while the TV is on that Wi-Fi. How to set up the router filter for Samsung and LG TVs.

Picking a plan for the TV

TVs are covered by the Whole-Home plan. See pricing for what each plan includes, or the full device comparison for phones and tablets too.

Questions parents ask

What about Samsung and LG TVs?
There's no Guardian app for Samsung Tizen TVs. What works: the family website filter on your home router, which covers this TV and everything else on your home Wi-Fi. Turn it on from the Content filtering page and follow the home router step. Some routers don't offer the setting it needs.
Can Guardian control an Apple TV?
Pairs and shows its status. No app controls; websites are filtered through your home router. Apple gives apps on Apple TV no way to block apps, set hours or lock it. That's a limit of the platform, not something waiting on an update. Websites: turn on the family website filter on the Content filtering page and follow the home router step. It covers the Apple TV and everything else on your home Wi-Fi.
How does website filtering work?
Turn on the family website filter for each person in your Guardian account, on the Content filtering page. A new filter blocks adult content and turns on SafeSearch, and you can add categories and websites. Set it up once on each device: a settings file on iPhone, iPad and Mac, one setting on Android 9 or later, or your home router for Apple TV, Samsung and LG TVs. Android phones, tablets and TVs can also block single websites themselves. No list of the websites your family visits is kept.
