Filter websites on Samsung and LG TVs with your home router

Last updated October 26, 2026

Samsung TVs run Tizen and LG TVs run webOS. There's no Guardian app for Samsung Tizen TVs. There's no Guardian app for LG webOS TVs. Neither system lets another app block apps or lock the TV, so Guardian doesn't pretend to. What does work is filtering websites before they reach the TV, at your home router.

What the family website filter blocks

Turning it on blocks porn and turns on SafeSearch straight away. You can change the blocked categories afterwards. SafeSearch is on: Google, Bing and other search engines hide explicit results.

Categories you can turn on:

  • Porn
  • Gambling
  • Dating
  • Piracy
  • Social networks
  • Gaming
  • Video streaming

You can also block single websites, up to 500 for each person. No list of the websites your family visits is kept.

Set it up on your router

  1. In Guardian, open the Content filtering page and turn on the family website filter for the person whose rules the home network should follow.
  2. Under "Home router, for Apple TV, Samsung and LG TVs and everything else", copy the address shown. In your router's settings, add this as its encrypted DNS (DNS over HTTPS) address. Where to find it depends on your router, and some routers don't offer it.
  3. Save the router settings. From then on, the Samsung or LG TV and every other device on your home Wi-Fi use the filter, with nothing installed on the TV.

If your router doesn't have the setting

Look for "DNS over HTTPS", "encrypted DNS" or "DoH" in the router's internet or DNS settings. If it isn't there, the router can't use the filter; phones and tablets can still be set up one by one from the same page.

What this covers, and what it can't

  • Covers: the TV's own browser and any app that looks up a blocked website, plus every other device on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Doesn't cover: blocking apps, block hours, daily time limits or locking the TV. Samsung and LG don't allow any app to do those.
  • Only at home: the router filter applies while the TV is on your home Wi-Fi.

Questions parents ask

What about Samsung and LG TVs?
There's no Guardian app for Samsung Tizen TVs. What works: the family website filter on your home router, which covers this TV and everything else on your home Wi-Fi. Turn it on from the Content filtering page and follow the home router step. Some routers don't offer the setting it needs.
How does website filtering work?
Turn on the family website filter for each person in your Guardian account, on the Content filtering page. A new filter blocks adult content and turns on SafeSearch, and you can add categories and websites. Set it up once on each device: a settings file on iPhone, iPad and Mac, one setting on Android 9 or later, or your home router for Apple TV, Samsung and LG TVs. Android phones, tablets and TVs can also block single websites themselves. No list of the websites your family visits is kept.
